Outline: Overview of the process of personal injury litigation. The focus of this section will be on admissible clinical documentation including history taking, physical examination findings and correlation with advanced imaging findings. Courtroom rules and etiquette will be discussed and outlined. Daubert and Frye standards will be reviewed and presented as they relate to the Doctor of Chiropractic.

Outline: Presentation of LIVE direct, cross, and re-direct examination using a specific real-world case. The focus of this section is for participants to witness courtroom process in handling the treating Doctor of Chiropractic’s professional and/or expert opinion pertaining to pre-existing conditions, persistent functional loss, interprofessional communication and referrals, causality of bodily injury and low speed/low property damage collisions.

Speaker: John Edwards, MD – Neurosurgeon
Outline: Dr. Edwards will share with the group the need for neurosurgeons to have a properly trained Spine Management Physician as a member of their community-based team. In particular, he will focus on the need to manage spine cases as an interprofessional community. Dr. Edwards will outline how the National Spine Management Group and its Fellowship in Spinal Biomechanics and Trauma are preparing Doctors of Chiropractic to lead the national effort to better manage spine pain in the United States.
2:30 pm – 4:00 pm – INTERPROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION IN SPINE MANAGEMENT

Outline: Starting with compliant evaluation documentation, Dr. Owens will discuss the complete workflow including patient scheduling, patient evaluation, advanced imaging protocols, medical specialist referrals and medical legal communication in the patient with spinal injuries. He will discuss the three categories of documentation, Evaluation/Management, Progress Notes and Narrative Reports in terms of proper formatting, streamlining processes and how they meet the needs of the various entities involved in managing spine cases.

9:00 am – 10:30 am – HISTOLOGY AND PHYSICAL TOLERANCE OF SPINAL LIGAMENTS

Outline: Presentation on the histological properties of spinal ligaments, their locations, and physical tolerances. Detailed review of the physiological properties including coupling motion and its relation to spinal biomechanics and spinal injury will be correlated and presented. Clinical diagnosis and objectification of spinal ligament injury with current research parameters will be presented.

Outline: Discussion of basic physics relating to Crash Investigation and Accident Reconstruction. Review of biomechanical reports and analysis of mathematical methods will be reviewed and discussed in relation to spinal injury and patient management. Outline: Research review of scientific methods to evaluation degenerative spinal disease and its relationships to the presence of ligamentous laxity. Evidence based differences between hypermobility in the spinal column due to degenerative changes and acute ligamentous injury will be demonstrated and discussed.
